Renault Duster Hybrid Gets a 1400km Range, How?
Renault Duster hybrid was launched recently and comes packed with a 1400km range. Is the new hybrid worth it? Let's find out!

Renault might have thought that reintroducing the iconic Duster would revive the brand’s low sales. But destiny had something else planned. Despite its best marketing efforts, the brand somewhat failed to retain the Duster's existing fanbase. So much so that they had to launch a hybrid variant just to keep its existence alive and to somehow grab the attention of the audience with something.
Yes, Renault has launched the hybrid Duster within mere months of the launch of the actual new-generation Duster, which of course comes loaded with features and a hefty price tag compared to its rivals. However, the new Hybrid Renault Duster has been launched with a very subtle price tag of Rs 16.99 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi)
However, the focus of this article is not how expensive or useless the Duster has become, but that it's the highest ever range among any hybrid passenger vehicle on offer in the country. It gets a 1400 km range and a 29 kmpl mileage on a single full fuel tank and the battery pack. So, without wasting any more time, let's get into the functions.
The ugly truth behind the claim
The new Duster hybrid uses a strong hybrid system, as it makes use of a 1.8-litre engine churning out 108.5 bhp with a peak torque of 172 Nm, while mated to a 1.4 kWh NMC battery pack.
The combined output on the 2026 Renault Duster Hybrid stands at 158 bhp with a peak torque of 208Nm.
It not new that we have seen an actual real-world range of 1,000 km in a few plug-in hybrids like the Toyota Innova and a few others on a full tank.
Renault’s 1,400 km range stands on the SUV’s dual motor system (traction and generator motors). And just like any plug-in hybrid operates in EV-only mode (the battery runs the traction motor, which is charged by the generator), parallel (battery and engine power the traction motor) with engine-only modes as well.
The new Duster Plug-in hybrid also has 2 battery regen modes. Its pretty clear that Renault has its focus set on how they can efficiently charge the battery pack on the hybrid Duster, and given that the battery is an NMC unit at its core, it can discharge very quickly.
Renault has also claimed that the battery can discharge at a rate of 50C, which, in layman's terms, simply means that the battery can discharge at a speed of 50 times its original capacity.
Given the emphasis on this discharge rate, coupled with a battery-first approach, the Duster Hybrid should deliver EV-like acceleration in floor-down scenarios.
Renault also mentioned that the transmission on the Duster Hybrid uses four speeds for the engine and two for the EV setup, simply translating to the Creta and Seltos rival having an eight-speed gearbox with a transmission efficiency of 98%.
Who should buy the Renault Duster Hybrid?
The hybrid Duster happens to be a strong hybrid, with claims of a plug-in hybrid, building a solid case for people who are looking out for an overpriced but efficient car without worrying about looking out for a dedicated charging setup.
Renault has also claimed that the Duster has an 80% EV-only driving range in the city, without hampering the true capabilities of an actual plug-in hybrid, which can travel longer distances at much higher speeds in the EV-only mode.
