Hyundai Creta is a mid-size SUV engineered to meet the needs of everyday driving, family outings and highway trips. It comes with three engine choices: 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol power, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol power and 1.5-litre common rail diesel power. Each Powertrain offers a unique combination of power, acceleration and fuel efficiency.

Engine and Power Output

The Hyundai Creta is powered by a 1,5-litre MPi petrol engine with a displacement of 1,497 cc that generates a power of 115 PS at 6,300 rpm and torque of 143.8 Nm at 4,500 rpm. It comes as a 6-speed manual transmission or Intelligent Variable Transmission (iVT) automatic.

With a 1,482cc displacement, the 1.5-litre Turbo GDi petrol engine delivers 160 PS of power at 5,500 rpm and 253 Nm of torque in the range of 1,500 to 3,500 rpm. It's mated to their 7 speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). This engine provides more power and torque than the naturally-aspirated petrol one does.

The third is a 1.5-litre U2 CRDi diesel engine. It produces 116 PS of power at 4,000 rpm and 250 Nm of torque between 1,500 and 2,750 rpm. It comes in a manual or automatic transmission, with the latter being a six speed automatic.

City Driving Performance

The naturally aspirated petrol engine is ideal for everyday driving and commuting, as well as normal city driving. The power delivery of its model is suitable for regular traffic and the automatic type iVT is suitable for those who often find themselves in heavy traffic.

The turbo-petrol engine is more powerful and will provide enhanced acceleration for those seeking more dynamic performance. It's fitted with an automatic transmission, the DCT, which takes care of gear changes; however, its drive characteristics differ from the iVT.

The torque of the diesel engine can be beneficial at low and mid-speed driving conditions. Its automatic transmission is convenient for those who prefer not to shift gears manually in heavy traffic, and it can extend the life of manual transmissions by up to 40 percent. It extends up to 40 percent the life of manual transmission, and offers convenience for drivers who do not want to change gears in heavy traffic.

Highway Performance

For highway journeys, the turbo-petrol engine offers a combination of high power and torque. It features a 7-speed automatic transmission that shifts gears without the driver having to touch the clutch. It is ideal if the driver is interested in quick acceleration.

For longer distances, the diesel engine is also available. It has 250 Nm of torque but the torque is available at relatively lower engine speeds which helps to maintain momentum under different driving conditions.

The petrol naturally aspirated engine is also capable of cruising on the highway. Under certain circumstances, depending on the road conditions and load of the vehicle, drivers will have to shift to lower gears when accelerating or overtaking.

The Creta's claimed fuel efficiency varies according to the engine and transmission. As per Published ARAI figures, these are the stats provided by Autocar India:

- 1.5-litre petrol manual: 17.4 km/l

- 1.5-litre petrol iVT: 17.7 km/l

- 1.5-litre turbo-petrol DCT: 18.4 km/l

- 1.5-litre diesel manual: 21.8 km/l

- 1.5-litre diesel automatic: 19.1 km/l

Fuel economy ratings are based on the test, not actual performance. Actual mileage may differ due to traffic conditions, driving habits, road conditions, air conditioning and load.

Final Verdict

The Hyundai Creta comes in three different power options. The naturally aspirated petrol engine is ideal for everyday driving, the turbo-petrol engine for more acceleration, and the diesel for more torque for longer-distance trips.

It will depend on the distance driven, preference for transmission style and desired fuel economy. When looking for an engine and gearbox option, one can make a comparison to determine which one suits the buyer's requirements the best.
